Angus Mathieson is a British painter and polymath, born in Warwickshire, 1994.
Largely self taught through the study of the old masters, Angus draws upon traditional materials and techniques to bring out the natural, humanistic values often lost in a fast-paced contemporary world. A time-intensive process involving the application of multiple paint layers, borrowed from early masters such as Leonardo and Johannes Vermeer is used to capture the nuanced introspective subjects of his work. By working with genuine historical pigments, some of which have been seldom used for over two centuries, Angus recreates the depth and glow often lost with the use of modern synthetic materials, and makes each work of art something precious and special to hold. Angus harnesses the illusory paint handling techniques known to the great masters to try and produce paintings that capture more feeling of reality than a photograph ever can.
Artworks by Angus Mathieson can now be found in private collections across Britain and the United States.
Angus also holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge in the Natural Sciences and is employed at the forefront of research and the invention of new technologies. A select list of Angus’ scientific publications can be found here.
